Breeding for the
Western Areas of the United States
Betaseeds
Kimberly, Idaho Research Center develops sugarbeet varieties for
the western production areas, where commercial sugarbeet crops
are typically irrigated, as well as varieties with specific
disease resistance for all of the U.S. and other countries.
Our
Idaho research staff operates breeding programs targeted to
produce varieties with tolerance to specific diseases. These
diseases, such as Curly Top, Rhizomania, Rhizoctonia, Erwinia,
Powdery Mildew, Fusarium, and Virus Yellows, pose major threats
to growers in many regions of the United States and other
countries.
Kimberly
researchers conduct yield trials of hundreds of potentially new
varieties in Idaho, Oregon, California, northern Wyoming and
southern Montana. The results are used to select new varieties
for official trials of sugar companies.
The
Kimberly Research Center, established in 1973, includes 170
acres of irrigated farmland for yield and disease trials. A
recently constructed state-of-the art greenhouse has the
capacity for producing approximately 42,000 plants for
transplanting into seed production fields, thus enabling us to
expand the capacity of our breeding programs.
