New World Sugarbeet Production
Record Set Using a Betaseed Variety
Imperial Valley, CA, February 2012 – World record sugarbeet grower,
Mr. Ben Abatti, Jr. of Baja Farms, was honored at the California
Beet Growers annual meeting for setting a new yield record using
a Betaseed, Inc. variety.
Baja Farms planted Betaseed’s 4521R sugarbeet variety in a 70 acre
field that averaged 78.71 tons per acre, with 15.89% sugar content.
Overall, Mr. Abatti’s crop produced 25,014 pounds of sugar per acre,
breaking the old record by 500 lbs. Knowing the land and matching it
to a variety that works, is key in growing a top crop.
“I have used various Betaseed
varieties for the past ten years, using the 4521R variety for the
past 4 years. I conduct my own in-house trials before planting large
acres of any variety. I chose this variety of seed because it out-performed
all other varieties under varying conditions.” said Ben Abatti,
Jr. of Baja Farms.
Betaseed’s research and development team plants several trials per
market so that approved varieties of sugarbeet seed is available at
planting time. Growers using these varieties have experienced strong
emergence and high-yielding harvests throughout the years.
“4521R is just a great workhorse that does well, yielding tremendous
tonnage and sugar content. I would strongly recommend this variety
to anyone wanting to increase their bottom line. From the strong
vigor shown at emergence to the high tonnage harvested at the end.
This plant produces results! It is truly an honor to hold this world
record.” said Ben Abatti, Jr. with family by his side as he
received the award.
World record sugarbeet crops are not new to Betaseed. In 2002, Betaseed
variety 4430R yielded over 20,773 lbs. of sugar per acre to set the
world record that stood for many years.

Statement by the Sugar Industry Biotech Council on Appellate Court Activity
On May 20, 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit granted the motion of Monsanto and other industry intervenors to dismiss the remaining appeals on Case number 10-17335. The intervenor group had voluntarily asked that the appeal be dismissed. As a result of subsequent court decisions and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) actions, continuation of the appeals had little consequence for Roundup Ready sugar beet growers or seed companies. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has issued interim measures to allow the planting of Roundup Ready sugar beets and farmers are planting Roundup Ready sugar beet crops.

NemaCease™ is a new Betaseed program to identify nematode infested fields and its crop effects, and increase yields when planting Betaseed nematode tolerant varieties.
Growers that are looking for an opportunity to
• increase their revenue per acre,
• increase their yields in infested fields,
• return infested fields to production and rotation, or
• eliminate the use of chemical controls costing 3 to 4 times more than planting a tolerant seed variety, should call their Betaseed representative to become a part of the 2010 NemaCease program.
The Nemacease program is offered to growers in Amalgamated, Western Sugar South, Sidney Sugars, and Michigan Sugar who have
• suspect fields,
• low yields, either historic or current,
• fields contiguous to confirmed pest infestation.

Infested vs Tolerant
To participate in the program, each grower purchases 4 units of a SBCN tolerant variety for a side-by-side comparison with 4 units of similar trait Betaseed varieties, and takes the trial to harvest.
Betaseed’s nematode tolerant varieties are an opportunity for growers to continue sugarbeet production in fields with high nematode pressure and increase yields and sugar content WITHOUT paying for chemical treatments.
