CONVISO^® SMART

CONVISO® ONE is the new herbicide from Bayer suitable for the use in the CONVISO® SMART system.

Correct timing

We recommend using the herbicide in a single application 1 x 1.0 l/ha of CONVISO® ONE and add adjuvant oil for a better efficiency. With CONVISO® SMART, the focus of the herbicide application moves away from the sugar beet more into detail to the weeds. The most relevant weed on your fields serves as indicator weed. In many cases the fat hen (Chenopodium album) is a good choice. The first application should be done in the 4 true leaves stage of the fat hen (CHEAL).

For the best efficacy of the system as well as a good weed resistance management, we recommend following the general principles:

Handling of the CONVISO^® ONE for spraying:

• Shake the CONVISO^® ONE can well 2 – 3 times upside down before filling it in the sprayer.
• In case of difficulties half empty the canister and shake again.
• Ensure full homogenization of deposit, as it may contain active ingredient.
• Do not add water into canister for emptying – only for final canister cleaning.

For the preparation of the sprayer, we want to highlight the following key facts:

• Recommended water volume: 150 – 300 l / ha
• pH value of water: 5 – 7
• Optimal temperature for spraying: 10 – 20° C
• Rain fastness period: 4 – 6 hours

First visible effects of CONVISO^® ONE

• CONVISO^® ONE is a systemic herbicide being absorbed and translocated through the plant.
• Weeds stop growing after treatment, symptoms take longer to be visible. Symptoms expressed can be in the form of yellowing and stunting.
• First herbicidal effects will be visible after approx. 5 – 7 days.
• Complete dying off can take up to 4 weeks depending on the weather conditions.

About CONVISO® SMART

The CONVISO® SMART system combines two innovative components to bring weed management to a new level.

The combination of the innovative herbicide CONVISO® ONE and the BTS SMART variety, which tolerant to the combined ALS-inhibtor herbicide CONVISO® ONE, brings crop safety and a highly efficient weed management together.

Furthermore, CONVISO® SMART allows to clean fields from classic weed beets, as the herbicide works as an ALS-inhibitor the mode of action, which differs from the classic sugarbeet herbicides.

About bolting

Bolting is the natural reaction of a sugarbeet plant once it gets the signal to develop to the vegetative phase, which normally follows in the second crop year. Bolting can be caused by cold temperatures (between 3 and 8°C) affecting the young sugarbeet over a longer time period. But also other stress factors can induce the bolting impulse to the small sugarbeet.

Therefore, we recommend to check already before sowing the suitablity of the chosen variety for your planting time and prepare the sowing in the best conditions to give as less stress as possible to the young seedling of a plant.

Bolters and CONVISO® SMART

CONVISO® SMART is maybe the "Once-in-a-lifetime" solution to clean the fields from weed beets from conventional sugarbeets, as the herbicide CONVISO® ONE has a strong effect on classical weed beets.

In first effect, that will limit the pressure of bolter removal on CONVISO® SMART fields. But even with a optimal crop management it's not possilbe to avoid that some CONVISO® SMART sugarbeets start bolting as bolting is a natural reaction of the sugar beet plant.

It is highly necessary to remove all CONVISO® SMART bolters from the fields, as the bolters can't be controlled neither with CONVISO® ONE nor a classical sugarbeet herbicide.

Every bolter needs to be conscientiously removed from CONVISO® SMART fields.

Following the application of CONVISO^® ONE, there are some restrictions in the following crops according to the label.

In the graphic you can see a summary of the registered follwing crops according to the label.

Other crops are not specifically registered on the label, therefore it is not adviced to grow them after CONVISO^® SMART sugarbeet.

• Groundkeepers of SMART varieties should be controlled by a non-ALS inhibiting herbicide in the following crop.
• Minimize crop losses while harvesting and loading.
• Ploughing is recommended following a CONVISO^® SMART sugar beet crop.
• Use glyphosate to fight against groundkeepers where possible.
• Hormone weed killers (MCPA and 2,4-D) have been seen to be effecrive against ALS-tolerant sugar beet.
• Never allow bolting of groundkeepers!

Use CONVISO^® ONE according to the weed resistance management guidelines.

• Use the recommended full dose rate.
• Add an adjuvant to strengthen the efficacy if required.
• Respect the appropriate recommended growth stage of weeds for application.
• Sequence CONVISO^® ONE application with non-ALS herbicides when required.
• Consider a non-selective herbicide as a preceeding treatment after allowing emergence of weeds.
• Always investigate the reasons for lower levels of efficacy control
• Make use of good agricultural practice to ensure good weed resistance management.
• Use measures of integrated weed management (cultural, mechanical and chemical control).
• Use cover crops if possible to reduce weed pressure.
• Respect the crop rotation.
• Rotate different herbicide mode of action in the crop rotation.
• Use at least once in a 3-year crop rotation a pre-emergence / early post-emergence non-ALS inhibiting herbicide.
• If resistance is suspected, consult with a BASIS qualified advisor and use alternative herbicides.

In general, a good weed management is a good weed resistance management!
